Production
CMS guardrails for staff who should not design
Give staff a sharp knife and a clear cutting board. Do not give them a welding torch and call it empowerment.
Draw the lines in the kit
Templates, content types, and component slots are the lines. If a page needs a one-off layout every week, you do not have a content problem — you have an unfinished design system.
Train on the three verbs
Edit copy. Replace image. Publish. If onboarding requires a Figma course, the tool is wrong for the role. Advanced structure changes stay with whoever owns the chassis.
Preview is part of the craft
Never ask people to edit blind. A preview that matches production prevents “we’ll fix it live” culture. Pair that with drafts so experiments never need heroism.
Measure what staff feel
Ask once a month: what took too many clicks? Which field was confusing? Fix those before you add a new marketing module. Throughput is a product feature of the CMS.
